True Sin NPCs (Non-Player Characters)

NPCs -- or Non-Player Characters -- are characters who are not necessarily part of the everyday minutia of True Sin, but can be used to further either a large-scale story arc or a personal plotline. Anyone is free to write an NPC character, and it is not necessary to apply to the moderators. NPCs can serve as allies to regular characters -- such as a sibling or spouse -- or they can serve as an adversary. Please, feel free to use your imagination whenever deciding what sorts of NPCs could color the city of Chicago and inhabit the True Sin universe.

As with regular characters, all NPCs will be original characters.

The NPC journal can also be used for newspaper stories, if anyone feels so inclined to write them. There are two major newspapers in Chicago -- the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times. There are also several smaller, independent periodicals within the city, and if you want to create a small, independent newspaper or magazine, feel free to ask a moderator. All newspaper articles should be submitted and posted to the NPC journal, as well as the main True Sin page.

All NPC entries should be posted both to the NPC journal and the game's main page. Always be sure to give credit to the person who wrote the NPC in a scene involving more than one writer -- simply add [NPC Joe Schmoe was written by Jeff.] -- and if you submit an NPC solo, please add a note at the bottom indicating who wrote it -- like [Submitted by Jessica.]

Feel free to add icons to the NPC journal (username: truesin_npc, password: truesinnpc), but make sure to add NPC name and writer's name to the icon so everyone knows to whom it belongs.

Welcome to the Wetpaint resource page for True Sin, an InsaneJournal-based roleplaying game based on the True Blood television series and the Southern Vampire Mysteries by novelist Charlaine Harris. We do not claim to own or have any rights to content owned by HBO and Charlaine Harris -- in other words, PLEASE don't sue us!

True Sin is completely centered around original characters in a completely new setting, based on the mythological universe of True Blood. Other than relating to the overall mythology and canon established within the television show, True Sin has no connection to the HBO hit. There will be no canon characters.

Feel free to browse the site using the links on the left side of this page. Throughout the site, you will find information relating to the overall premise and setting of True Sin, as well as the few rules and regulations we have. You'll also learn how to apply for a character in our community, and you'll see a breakdown of each character, regular and NPC, that will be featured in True Sin.

The True Sin Wetpaint site is a constant work-in-progress, so be sure to keep checking in periodically. Much like True Sin itself, this site is fluid, constantly changing and evolving -- particularly as we move in True Sin's "second season." We established a lot of plotlines and themes in the "first season" of this game, and we look forward to diving even deeper into those stories to shake the foundation of True Sin's Chicago and those who call it home.

That's one of the reasons we've set this game in an entirely different location and made this an exclusively all-original character concept. Season One Review

The "First Season" of True Sin laid the foundation for what this game will become as we move forward with the "Second Season" and beyond. Though there was no overall plot or theme, the beginning stages of True Sin were not without their importance. Below is a run-down of "Season One's" most important developments:

*Finn Howard was established as one of the two vampire sheriffs in Chicago. He watches over the North Side of the city, and he doesn't take kindly to those vampires who run about killing humans without discretion or any attempt at keeping things secret (like, say, Donald Jensen).

*Adam Thurston began his campaign for mayor by running on an anti-vampire platform. Affiliated with the Fellowship of the Sun, Adam relied on peoples' latent fears of the undead to help his campaign. Season Two will reveal the results of the election.

*Adam also deals V; his wife Nicole found an empty vial in their home one night.

*Spencer Matthews, one of Adam's most trusted campaign aides, works behind the scenes to enact Adam's anti-vampire message. He also carries on a romance with Jamie Rush.

*Faye was established as the vampire queen of Illinois, striking up a friendship with the young and fun-loving vampire thief Thea Daughtrey.

*Thea, on behalf of Finn, broke into Adam's estate and stole a baby's crib and Nicole's fertility medication. Nicole and Adam had been trying for years to conceive, and Finn wanted to send the mayoral candidate a message through Thea's theft.

*Julianna Matsis joined the Soldiers of the Sun to fight vampires, using V to give her the strength to defeat them. She killed a V dealer who threatened to expose her--and by extension, the entire operation's plan. Dealing and using V is illegal, and Chicago authorities actually bother to enforce that law.

*A new vampire hunter named Warren was revealed. Warren does not affiliate with the Soldiers of the Sun. In fact, he has a lot of disdain for them.

Characters Wanted

True Sin is looking for humans, vampires, shapeshifters, werewolves, psychics, users of witchcraft and black magic, telepaths and other mythological creatures. Here are some potential character ideas:

Members of the Fellowship of the Sun Church & Soldiers of the Sun
These can be devout followers, preachers, or just people who wanted to be a part of something and fell into the Fellowship. This church exists for the sole purpose of ridding the world of vampires, considering them affronts to the Lord and a threat to everything humanity holds dear and holy. This church tends to accept egregious and violent acts committed in the name of vampire hatred, taking a very "means to an end" approach to their calling.

Soldiers of the Sun are also accepted; members of the Fellowship who take it upon themselves to eradicate the vampire menace. Even though it is against the law to kill a vampire (unless it's in self-defense), Chicago law enforcement is relatively lax in enforcing it.

Vampires
Since this game is based on a vampire story, it only makes sense for us to accept vampire characters. Vampires in True Sin don't necessarily fit the mold of what we consider a vampire. Sure, they drink human blood and stalk along the night, but there are key differences. Vampires can be killed via stake to the heart (beware: this is a grisly death -- these vamps don't just poof into dust) or with sunlight or fire.

Vampires do cast reflections in the mirror, and crosses and garlic have no effect on them. According to Bill Compton (or as I like to call him, Sookie Stackhouse Love Interest No. 1), vampires claimed these as weaknesses and characteristics to help them walk among humans. "Hey, I have a reflection, so there's no way I'm a vampire! See?" Vampires can also hide their fangs, only revealing them when feeding or threatened. Other than the fangs, vampires' faces do not change when they go all "grr!"

Some vampires choose to "mainstream," which is to say they try to live among humans. These vampires tend not to feed on humans, subsisting instead on the synthetic drink Tru Blood. There is no "vampire with a soul" mythology in the True Blood universe; the distinction between good vampires and evil vampires in this universe essentially boils down to philosophical differences over what it means to be a vampire.

Drainers and other dealers of illicit materials
This game is all about corruption and the dark underbelly present in modern-day society (particularly in Chicago), and as such, we need V dealers (like Lafayette from the television series).

Shapeshifters
Either with good intentions or bad. Think Sam Merlotte and MaryAnn from the television series.

Werewolves
We will accept werewolf characters sparingly; since Chicago is a bustling metropolis (unlike Bon Temps), it's unlikely the city would have a lot of werewolves. It is entirely possible, however, for werewolves to live in the more rural areas surrounding Chicago. Refer to season 3 of True Blood to familiarize yourself with this universe's werewolf lore.

Psychics
Sookie Stackhouse, main character of both the Charlaine Harris novels and the HBO television series, is psychic. Though we're led to believe at first that she's a human being, Sookie has always had the ability to hear peoples' thoughts -- even if she can't always control what she hears. A character with this ability is welcome, particularly one who has a different philosophy about their power and a varying degree of control. A psychic is rife with creative possibilities.

Witches
No Miss Jeanette here...we're looking for honest-to-goddess witches. White magic, black magic, someone who merely follows a pagan spiritual path--we will gladly accept such characters if their backstories mesh and they bring a lot to the overall plot and feel of True Sin. We'll also accept fake witches (the aforementioned Miss Jeanette is an incredibly disgusting example).

Humans
Humans who are on either side of the vampire debate are also welcome; not every character needs to automatically be supernatural, nor do we necessarily need characters who have strange abilities (like, say, being able to hear peoples' thoughts). We want an interesting mix of people that will make for equally interesting storylines.

Get creative and see what you can come up with. Be mindful of established canon and rules, though; there are several resources online to help people who might not necessarily be aware of the True Blood canon. We'll be posting links to those resources shortly.

Rules and Format

True Sin will feature mature themes such as (but not necessarily limited to) violence, sexuality and other dark situations that uphold the spirit of Charlaine Harris and Alan Ball's work. As such, writers must be at least 17 years old in order to be considered for membership.

Writers are expected to treat each other with respect and courtesy. Writers who fail to do this are making the choice to not be a part of our community. True Sin was created as an opportunity for creative folks to be part of a fun-loving community, and petty personal dramas have no place in such an environment.

We expect writers to be active and contribute to the overall plot, as well as developing and maintaining their own storylines with regards to their characters. There are no set posting requirements (because we realize real life happens and sometimes likes to get in the way), but if you need to step away from the game for any period of time, a heads-up would be greatly appreciated. We understand that sometimes, real life interferes with the creative process. We want everyone to understand that if they have to step away from any length of time, True Sin will still be here when they get back.

When requesting scenes from other writers, it is perfectly acceptable to post a scene request list on the True Sin OOC (Out-Of-Character) page. It is perhaps better, though, to contact the other writers directly via email or chat and ask them personally for scenes -- that way, you can discuss potential scenarios and premises. When more writers begin joining True Sin, we will create a directory page for each writer, where anyone can view a writer's characters, email address and IM screen name.

Posting Formats

We request that all scenes be written in third-person, past tense style, and in paragraph form. Think a novel, instead of a screenplay. The occasional first-person narrative will be accepted as an exception, but only in the case of solo posts, and we would prefer they become the exception, not the rule. Using the third-person narrative as the benchmark helps all writers -- old and new -- understand the general feel and tone of True Sin.

Scenes may be composed via Instant Messenger (AOL, Yahoo or whatever other program you feel comfortable using -- though most of us use AIM) and GoogleDocs. GoogleDocs are tremendous for collaborating on scenes, particularly if both parties cannot be online simultaneously. Journal threads will be used sparingly, saved mostly for group plot posts or scenes in which time constraints prove to be an issue (think time zone differences, mostly).

Proper grammar and correct spelling are stressed. Chat speak is heavily frowned upon, unless the scene in question is an online conversation between two or more characters. Please remember that other writers will be reading your scenes, so take the necessary time for editing and spell-checking. Writers take pride in their work; we do the same here at True Sin.

When posting a scene, please post both to your character's IJ journal and to the main True Sin page. We ask that LJ cut tags be used for long posts (which would likely be all posts), and that the cut tags begin after the first four paragraphs of the scene. That way, the main page doesn't get bogged down with huge boxes of text, drowning out some scenes that were posted beforehand.

To insert a cut tag, enter the following HTML code before the text you wish to hide under the cut tag: <lj-cut text="Title">. Then, end the text you want hidden with this HTML code: </lj-cut>.

HTML codes are also used in IJ to bold, italicize and underline text, as well as to change font size and color.

Setting and Premise

Present Day

With the advent of synthetic blood (the drink Tru Blood) and the Great Revelation, the world was introduced to vampires "coming out of their coffins" in droves. Some accepted them, others reviled them, and then there are those who became irrevocably drawn to the world of vampires, blood-drinkers and immortals.

In Chicago, the vampire-hating Fellowship of the Sun (and its zealous Soldiers of the Sun) has just set up a new mega-church, supported by a misguided and naive mayoral candidate. Both of the city's vampire sheriffs are none too pleased with this development, and people on both sides of this ideological battle are worried that a war is imminent in a city known for its denizens who make up their own rules. Considering Chicago's dark history of political and personal corruption, this latest chapter in the city's saga could very well change the landscape of the Midwest for years to come.

There are two vampire sheriffs in Chicago, one who oversees the North Side and another who controls the South Side, and they oversee much of the undead activity within the Windy City. How vampires interact amongst themselves will play as big a role in shaping the supernatural landscape of the city as the undead interacting with other supernatural beings and humans as a whole. The presence of vampires, now common knowledge, could prove advantageous on several fronts, including -- but not limited to -- the city's political battlefields.

Though True Sin is based in Chicago, the experiences and occurrences within the context of this game serve as a microcosm for what the rest of the country -- and in fact, the rest of the world -- faces in dealing with the newly-revealed supernatural menace. Humanity comes down on both sides of the fence when it comes to vampires -- many abhor the undead abominations as monsters, while others still champion undead causes, viewing this as a sort of perverse civil rights battle.

That dichotomy is an underlying theme in almost everything that goes on within the True Sin universe.

True Sin follows the mythology presented in the Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlaine Harris, and as represented on the HBO television series True Blood. However, this game will be comprised of all original characters and NPCs. Sookie, Bill and Co. are still in Bon Temps, doing their respective things, and those actions will have no bearing on True Sin.

Character Application

True Sin will be comprised entirely of orginial characters. Though the game will be based on the universe established by the True Blood HBO television series and the Southern Vampire Mysteries novels, none of the characters established in those mediums will be featured in True Sin. This game does not take place in Bon Temps, and none of the characters established in the novels or television series will be visiting Chicago for the purpose of this game. The beauty of this game is its purely original and fresh nature, and we will treat character creation as one aspect of that.

If you're looking to write an NPC, you must first be a member of the game who has at least one regular character. However, you do not need to submit an application for your prospective NPCs; a simple conversation with one of the mods will do just fine. If at any point, you would like to turn one of your NPCs into a full-time character, simply alert one of the moderators and begin the character application process as you would for an entirely new character.

There is no limit to how many characters a writer can have, but we ask that you not spread yourself too thin, or that one muse start taking away from another. We ask that you only take on as many characters as you can handle.
